- Gina Lettiere, volunteer coordinator for the Alliance for the Great Lakes is confirmed to talk about their adopt a beach program. The Great Lakes host some of the world's most beautiful beaches, but keeping them clean is not just a concern those interested in the scenery. Unsightly trash can also cause ecological problems. The Alliance for the Great Lakes recruits families, schools, businesses and community-based groups to monitor litter and test water quality along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Adopters work with the Alliance to locate a beach to adopt and log the information they gather into our online database.

- A representative from the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless stops by to talk about the Big Box Ordinance.

I'll be hosting this week. So far, here's what we've got:

-Peter Grosz, development director of Equip for Reality, will be discussing self-advocacy and important intersections among education, services, and treatment that allow communities to address discrimination of the children and adults with physical and mental disabilities. He will describe the legal aid program there and the efforts to help families understand individuals with developmental challenges and to help individuals advocate on their own behalf. www.equipforequality.org

A musician from the Justice Music Project CD will perform.

And Jenni Prokopy will describe how technology and "convergence media" have transformed her hobby website Chronic Babe and offer ideas for other activists and advocates on how to respond to new media. From blog carnivals, e-newsletters, building relationships with other bloggers, newsletter submissions to e-zine/e-newsletter directories, registering with sites like technorati and search engine optimization ... Chronicbabe.com has grown by recognizing the new media landscape and exploring all the communications channels available today including traditional things like CAN-TV, writing newsletter articles for associations, public speaking, news releases.

-It is the 30th anniversary weekend of the Cafe as well as a WLUW pledge drive so the entire show will be focused on community, family and the sense of belonging that come from both.

-Author Jacque Day will talk about Images of America: Rogers Park and the history that connects residents in this unique community on Chicago’s northside.

-Director Sheila Norman and actress Trisha Mann will talk about Chicago filmmaking and their new production REUNION, a colorful family comedy debuting at the Black Harvest Festival this month. The film offers the energy, joy and tears of family relationships as it weaves the story of a weekend celebration of the intermarried yet rival Smith and Wesson clans at a Hot Springs hotel.

- Rich Whitney collected over 39,000 petition signatures to get on the ballot as the Green Party candidate for Illinois Governor. With 25,000 needed to get on the ballot, they thought they had a comfortable cushion to allow them to proceed with their campaign. However, challenges from powerful members of the state's Democratic party have called into question nearly 60% of their signatures. Whitney, in town from Carbondale, will be talking about the Green Party's effort to get on the ballot and the difficulty of reforming the political landscape of Illinois.

-The Mayor of Carora, Venezuela, Mr. Julio Chavez, (in a return visit to LFTH)stops by. He'll be talking about his visit to Milwaukee where a Sister Cities agreement with Carora is expected to be approved.

Founded in 1569, the city of Carora is currently at the forefront of Venezuela's efforts to build a participatory democracy. Recently adopted legislation allows Carora citizens to participate directly in the drafting of the municipal budget and the supervision local government's expenditures including the civil servants' salaries. Through a process know as "social comptrollership" elected neighborhood assemblies can directly receive resources from the central government to execute their own local projects to address needs such as new sidewalks, street lighting, etc., bypassing the local government bureaucracy.

-The godfather of Chicago postermaking, Steve Walters stops by along with Jay Ryan, president of the American Poster Institute.

I'll be hosting this week's show.

So far:

-Journalism in Iraq has been pioneered the use of embedded journalists. But Andrew Berends brings unencumbered images to the screen after gathering hundreds of hours of videos in his eight months of independent reporting in Iraq. His film, the Blood of my Brother offers the complex narratives of individuals living and surviving in a unstable and violent country. It runs July 7th though the 13th in Chicago at The Siskel Film Center. Andrew will share insights into the process of capturing the intimate impact war has on its survivors.

-WLUW Political Analyst, former CBS Washington DC Bureau Chief, and current instructor in politics and the press at Loyola University Chicago , Jack Smith joins me to talk about the Sorich verdict that broke late this week. We'll also examine how this will affect Mayor Daley.

-David Fagus, 49th Ward Democratic committeeman joins me to explain what's going on with the Cook County Board. With the current board president, John Stroger, recovering from a stroke, who calls the shots? Will there be an interim president? Tune in to get a local civics lesson!

Live music on 2 different stages, food and merchandize vendors, this swell event showcases Rogers Park's diverse businesses and peoples.

-In addition, Purdue student Eve Bottando will be coming with fellow travelers
from their Global Exchange program to talk about their recent trip to Caracas,
Venezuela. In their quest to find hope in action, they learned about the
cooperative newspaper being published there.

- Euan Hague talking about the new exhibit at Mess Hall called Contested Chicago: Pilsen & Gentrification. The exhibit focuses on gentrification as it affects the lower west side neigborhood of Pilsen.

- We'll also talk about Syrian Cinema. There's a series of movies running at The Gene Siskel Film Center throughought June that are part of Lens on Syria: Thirty Years of Contemporary Cinema.

- Organizers from this year's Artists of the Wall Festival drop by.

- And since it's Father's Day next week, my dad stops by the show to talk about modern-day parenting. That's right TWO Mike Stephens will hold court on the Heartland Stage this week.
