The Great Lakes host some of the world's most beautiful beaches, but keeping them clean is not just a concern those interested in the scenery. Unsightly trash can also cause ecological problems. The Alliance for the Great Lakes recruits families, schools, businesses and community-based groups to monitor litter and test water quality along the Lake Michigan shoreline. However, challenges from powerful members of the state's Democratic party have called into question nearly 60% of their signatures. He'll be talking about his visit to Milwaukee where a Sister Cities agreement with Carora is expected to be approved. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Founded in 1569, the city of Carora is currently at the forefront of Venezuela's efforts to build a participatory democracy. Recently adopted legislation allows Carora citizens to participate directly in the drafting of the municipal budget and the supervision local government's expenditures including the civil servants' salaries. His film, the &lt;em&gt;Blood of my Brother &lt;/em&gt;offers the complex narratives of individuals living and surviving in a unstable and violent country. The exhibit focuses on gentrification as it affects the lower west side neigborhood of Pilsen.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- We'll also talk about Syrian Cinema.  There's a series of movies running at &lt;a href="http://www.siskelfilmcenter.org"&gt;The Gene Siskel Film Center &lt;/a&gt;throughought June that are part of &lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Lens on Syria: Thirty Years of Contemporary Cinema&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- Organizers from this year's &lt;a href="http://www.rogerspark.com/master.htm?http://www.rogerspark.com/artistofthewall.htm"&gt;Artists of the Wall Festival &lt;/a&gt;drop by.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- And since it's Father's Day next week, my dad stops by the show to talk about modern-day parenting.
